Description

Vintage Japanese ink and wash calligraphy art on hard-backed rectangular shikishi paper.  This form of art is also sometimes called simply ‘wash’ painting and in Japanese is called sumi-e or suibokuga painting.  Using only brush-applied black ink on paper this type of painting was introduced into Japan in the 14th century by Zen Buddhist monks visiting from China.  This type of art is especially well suited to Japanese tastes which tend toward subtle depictions of life and nature often accented with poetry written in beautiful calligraphy.

About the Listed Item

This beautiful Japanese shikishi calligraphy art is less than 40 years old and is in fair condition with marks, creases, stains and some discoloration from age.  The edges of the shikishi paper board are a bit frayed though the piece remains a wonderful candidate for framing and display.

  1. Kunichiwa,

In the 1970s I purchased a Vintage Japanese ink and wash calligraphy painting on hard-backed rectangular shikishi paper from a private collector. In style, it looks very much like the examples shown on your site. I was told my sumi-e or suibokuga painting was several hundred years old at the time. The Zen Buddhist influence is obvious.

Can you advise me on how to find out more about the origins and value of this piece. I love it, and am reluctant to sell it. I’m more concerned at identifying the piece and the artist and its history and meaning.

    Thanks so much.

    Sayonara,
